A young couple go to check out a house they're thinking of buying. A somewhat mysterious woman tells the couple several stories of the fates that befell the house's previous owners.

Andrew Garfield, a banker, disowned his son for marrying beneath his station. He learns of his son's death and regrets his action. He determines to locate his son's widow and child in order to repair to some extent the results of his harshness. He advertises for them in the newspapers. The child chances to read the advertisement. Her mother decides to call on the banker, but has no suitable apparel. She writes a note to a neighboring family, asking for a loan, explaining the circumstances. These people, however, are a set of rogues, and take advantage of her confidence. Under pretense of helping her, they make her and her child prisoners and lock them in a wretched cellar. The woman then passes herself off to the banker as the widow whom he is seeking. Having been installed in the banker's home with her child, she succeeds in admitting her husband and her brother under the guise of servants. Puzzled by a series of thefts, the banker calls in Nick Winter, a famous detective.

When a banker is found shot dead with a gun in his hand, his daughter refuses to believe it is a suicide. With the help of a detective, she hopes to get to the bottom of the case.

Hammer House of Mystery and Suspense was a short-lived anthology television series from Hammer Studios. Though similar in format to the 1980 series Hammer House of Horror, the Mystery and Suspense series had feature-length episodes, usually running around 70 minutes without commercials.The series was a co-production by Hammer Studios with 20th Century Fox Television, and is known in the United States as Fox Mystery Theater. Unlike 1980's Hammer House of Horror, all the episodes had American actors as either the leads or in key roles. It was first aired in the UK by ITV in 1984, though was not simulcast and was shown in different timeslots throughout the various ITV regions.

In this movie (based on a true story) within a movie, a director tries to film the tale of an old KGB activist living in a parish house. In the summer of 1941 the activist tortured and killed Latvians in the cellar of the house. Although the old man hires others to brick over the cellar door, the murdered people keep coming through the stones and never leave him in peace. Unbeknownst to the film makers, the "real" KGB activist, now an aged drunk, is milling about the film set. Moreover, the director and lead actor are competing for the love of the lead actress, and the film's producer wants the director to re-shoot parts of the movie.
